Important Note: These silver panda mintage numbers are based on several different sources. Information regarding production totals from the China government mint (PRC mint) were often not released to the public. Originally, many of these silver Chinese panda coins were only sold outside of the country of China. Within the last few years the Chinese government began allowing their citizens to purchase them. The result is a major influx of panda coins being purchased by Chinese dealers and imported back into China to meet the collector demand. It has also resulted in a shortage (and higher prices) for the coins in the rest of the world.

(Note: like anything that is in high demand, a number of "fake" silver and gold panda coins are now found at flea markets and even on on-line auction sites such as e-bay. Beware of counterfeits.

The History of China PANDA BEAR silver coins:

The Chinese Panda Bear Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) silver one ounce coins were first made in 1989. (Proof silver panda coins were 1st minted in 1983.) Made of 99.9% pure silver and minted in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. In some years a limited number of proof coins and other size silver coins were minted. Each year the image of the Panda on the silver coin changes, with the exception of the years 2001 and 2002.

Weight - one troy ounce (= 31.1 grams)
Size (width): 40 mm (which is about the size of an old US silver dollar)
Design (obverse) - Temple of Heaven in Beijing
Design (reverse) - features Panda(s) - design changes most every year.
Face value: 10 Yuan (Chinese Yuan)
Official Peoples Republic of China government issued coin
The Gold Panda coins issued often have the same design or a similar design as the silver pandas for the same year
