Presidential $ Proof Set release - postponed

Circulation strike president dollars now available

 Feb 15^th marked the release date of the first of the new George Washington Presidential dollar coins by the United States government mint.  The new dollar coins were distributed into the banking system today (Feb. 15).  Several banks are now providing customers the new 2007 presidential dollars with P or D mintmarks.  Rolls and small bags of for circulation dollars are also available from the United States Mint at a premium price. 

Four presidential dollars are slated for release each year.  With four new coins per year, it will be 2016 before all presidents have been honored.  Approximately every 3 months a new US President $ coin will be introduced into circulation.

Issuance of a new Presidential Dollar Proof Coin Set is delayed 

The US Mint announced the introduction of a special 2007 Proof set featuring all four Presidential dollar coins with S mint marks.  These collector sets were to go on sale Feb 15^th.  However, the US mint now says the presidential proof set release date is postponed until this spring.  (See The US mint's 2007 coin schedule)

Presidential $ Proof sets will contain four proof dollar coins.  Each will have an “S” mint mark indicating the coin was made at the San Francisco United States government mint.  Unique this year, will be the location of the mint mark.  It is placed on the side edge of the coin, instead of under the date on the front.

Special proof set plastic holders are being planned in order for collectors to see the side of the coin, through the front and back of the holder.  Some are guessing that the delay in releasing the coins is due to the mint having to design, find, and purchase these new types of coin holders.
