1961 Silver Proof silver Coin set

These United States government mint proof 5 coin sets contains the old Benjamin Franklin US Half dollars (made of 90% solid silver). Coin set also contains the cent through quarter, with the dime and quarter being made of silver!  These special struck PROOF coins have a mirror-like finish and are still sealed in the mint's original mylar plastic-like flexible material. Minted at the United States government mint in Philadelphia. Nicer than the typical heavily tarnished old silver proof sets you might find at a coin show.  These came from a long time investor who wisely discarded the paper envelopes they were mailed in and safely stored them in a plastic bag.  (Silver coins may tarnish over time, and old decaying paper will worsen this process.)

 Where are they now?  Many-many old silver sets like these were melted for their silver content (during the great price rise in silver a couple decades ago).  Silver shot up so high in price that the sets became worth more for their silver value than their collector value.  How do we know?

We saw it happening at the time, but could do little about it.  At the time we purchased thousands and thousands of proof cents and nickels from just one dealer who melted the coins for their silver content.  Today, no one knows how many of the silver proof sets from 1958 to 1964 remain.

 Although mintages for 1961, 62, and 63 are not much different, this year seems to be a little harder to locate. Perhaps it is because at the time of the big silver melt downs 1963 was slightly cheaper than the 1961 or 1962 sets, resulting in more 1963 sets melted for their silver content.

1964 Silver Proof silver Coin set

This United States government mint proof 5 coin set contains the1st Kennedy Half dollar (made of 90% purity of solid silver). Also, this 1964 proof set contains a silver dime and quarter, along with a proof penny and nickel. Minted at the United States government mint in Philadelphia.

These special struck "proof" condition coins have a mirror-like finish and are still sealed in the mint's original mylar plastic-like flexible material. Better than the typical heavily tarnished 1964 set you might find at a coin show.  These came from a long time investor who safely stored them in a plastic bag and wisely discarded the paper envelopes they were mailed in. (Proof Silver coins will tarnish over time, and paper often causes this process to speed up.)

1965 US Special Mint Set

From 1965 to 1967 the US government did not make any proof sets.  Instead they minted SPECIAL MINT coin SETS (SMS).  These coins are Brilliant Uncirculated and handled with special care so that they do not exhibit the normal bag marks found on typical Uncirculated coins. 1965 is the first year of these SMS sets. These came from a long time investor who safely stored them in a plastic bag and wisely discarded the paper envelopes they were mailed in.  Coins are sealed in flexible clear plastic as issued by the US mint.  Contains 5 coins, Cent through Half Dollar coins. (The half dollar is made of 40% silver.)  All were produced at the Philadelphia US government mint.

1966 US Special Mint Set

From 1965 to 1967 the US government did not make any proof sets.  Instead they minted SPECIAL MINT coin SETS (SMS).  These coins are un-circulated (BU) and handled with special care so that they do not exhibit the normal bag marks found on typical Uncirculated coins. Starting in 1966 they placed the coins in a hard plastic holder and box.  Contains 5 coins: cent through half dollar. (The HALF dollar is made of 40% silver.) Produced at the Philadelphia United States government mint.

Contains 5 coins, Cent through Half Dollar coins. (The half dollar is made of 40% silver.)  Produced at the Philadelphia US government mint.

1967 is a lower mintage date.  Same style holder as the 1966 set.
