Johnson Matthey Silver BarsJohnson Matthey is one of the world's oldest silver refineries. Established first by Percival Johnson as a gold refinery in 1817, his company merged with George Matthey in 1851. Soon thereafter Johnson Matthey company was appointed as the official assayers and refiners of the Bank of England. Silver history of Johnson Matthey refineryIn the 1970's and 1980's Johnson Matthey Silver bars became very popular. Johnson Matthey silver bars are often called JM Silver bars, and even Johnson Matthey uses the initials JM to distinguish Johnson Matthey mint products from other company's products. Production and sales of 1 ounce JM Silver Bars and silver rounds, ten ounce JM silver bars, and even 100 ounce silver bars became popular with investors. Still in existence today, Johnson Matthey has become a large precious metals refinery and produces all kinds of large precious metals bars, including catalysts and platinum group metals. Johnson Matthey Silver Bars todayJohnson Matthey continues to refine silver and gold at its Utah and Ontario Canada refineries. However, JM only makes larger size silver bars today. They no longer makes the smaller size silver bars because it is not "cost effective" for them. Such bars are still obtainable from investors who bought them. Because they are no longer being produced, the supply of Johnson Matthey one ounce silver bars and ten ounce JM silver is limited. When you do find them, expect them to have a little tarnish or slight wear from handling over the years. Availability of JM Silver barsOccasionally we obtain some JM silver. Style of bars may vary from the picture above. Each bar will be at least 99.9% pure silver ( which equals .999 fine) and has an individual identification number stamped on the bar. Expect these to have some toning or tarnish, due to having been minted years ago. Approximate dimensions are 1 1/8inches by 2 inches (28mm x 50mm) Total of TEN ounces in this lot
